No. Anyone you share the link with can add a message, GIF, or photo without signing up. We only ask for a name so the recipient knows who each note is from. This makes Smiile easy to use across mixed teams, contractors, and people on different email systems.

Yes. The same Smiile link works anywhere — drop it into a Slack DM, a private Teams channel, or even a WhatsApp group. There's no separate app to install. We're rolling out native Slack and Teams unfurls so the card preview shows automatically when the link is posted.

Yes. Set the delivery date when you create the card and Smiile holds it until that morning, then emails it to the recipient. Contributors can keep adding messages right up until delivery. If you forgot to schedule it, you can also send manually any time.

Three to five business days is the sweet spot. That's enough time for everyone in the team to see the link, add a thoughtful message, and not feel rushed — without the card sitting around so long that it loses momentum. For larger teams (20+ contributors), start a week ahead.

We recommend everyone signs with a name so the recipient can connect each message to a person — that's what makes a group card feel meaningful versus a generic e-card. If a contributor leaves the name field blank, the message still appears, but it's tagged as "Anonymous." Most workplace etiquette guides advise against anonymous birthday signatures.

Keep it short, warm, and generic — one or two lines is plenty. "Hope you have a great day!" or "Wishing you a fantastic birthday — enjoy the cake!" works. Group cards have limited per-message space and the recipient won't expect a heartfelt essay from someone they barely know. Save the long messages for close colleagues.

Absolutely. A belated birthday card is better than no card. Most people genuinely don't mind, especially if the card acknowledges it ("Sorry this is late — we couldn't let your birthday go uncelebrated"). Smiile cards work just as well sent the week after. Don't let perfect timing stop you from sending one.

One to three sentences. Group cards display many messages on one screen, so short notes read better than paragraphs. If you have something specific to say (a shared joke, a thank-you, a memory), include it; otherwise a sincere one-liner is plenty. Avoid repeating what others have already written.
